Our Humble Beginnings
Paul grew up in Southampton in the UK, not far from where such great inventions such as the spitfire aeroplane and hovercraft were created and the home of the ocean-going liner.
​​​​​​Wearing hats back in the 1960’s was a usual occurrence for the older generation and indeed many children too. With the popular growth of the car and improved transportation the popularity of wearing hats declined from then on, especially for men.
​
Paul’s career has spanned retail, financial services, telecoms, leisure and business consultancy plus he has been involved in 5 business start-ups. Currently Paul works in the franchising world and business coaching with the plan for PJ Murphy and Son to build as a hat brand as it’s a passion and pleasure for Paul to share with his son Max.

How It All Started
Paul has been wearing a hat since having a health wakeup call making it necessary for him to wear a hat when out in the sun. Not being very sure of what would suit him and not having a specialist hat shop in the area he started to look at second-hand hats online. The worst that could happen if they didn’t fit, or he didn’t like them was that they would be sold on.

Little did he realise that he was about to embark on the never-ending journey of buying specialist tools necessary in the traditional process of making and restoring hats.
​
​Paul now enjoys buying hats for his collection, restoring them using the traditional methods and selling them on. He is now making new hats from high quality materials in classic fedora and trilby shapes with a traditional and modern take.

All our work is hand done using the traditional process and tools. To date Paul has restored over 250 hats and counting! And has more than 60 old and new hats in stock at any one time.
